A peaceful heart

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.  JOHN 14:27 (NASB)

Lord Jesus, I have allowed fear to enter my heart. Instead of turning to You in my hour of need, I’ve recoiled in fear of my earthly circumstances. When I consider what You endured on the cross to cover my sin, my grim situation shrinks in comparison. What peace did You have when You demonstrated Your love by dying for me? Yet You have an abundance of peace to share with all of us.

Every day, You remind me of Your peace in many ways. A friend, or even a stranger, will share a smile or a kind word. While stuck in traffic, a bumper sticker on the car in front of me declares Your love to all who will come to You. A tender embrace from a loved one envelopes me with the warmth of Your care.

Then I turn back to You, Lord. And in Your Word I find: “The peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7 NASB).

Thank You, gracious Lord, for Your patience when I am troubled, for Your forgiveness when I look away from You, and for Your words of truth to rein me back in with a peaceful heart. I pray this in Your wonderful name.

The God who hears

And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel, and God knew.  EXODUS 2:24-25 (ESV)

Greatest of listeners, thank You for hearing us when we call to You. In our simplest joys and through our deepest sorrows, we present our requests to You because You are the only one who has the power to give us what we need and so much more. The troubles of this world grow ever burdensome, but this grace is given to us: we may lift these burdens to You. So here they are. Here our groaning, Abba.

Remember the covenant You made with the patriarchs to enlarge, bless, and protect Your people. Do not forsake us or leave us prey to the devil’s sly ways. Though my heart is in anguish, I am able to take courage. You have heard. You remember. You see and You know. You know much more than I do about the state of my heart and of the world around me. You see into the depths of my overwhelmed spirit with the blessed eyes of the Creator, which see the problem much clearer that I.

You know the remedy. You delivered Your people from bondage in Egypt. Deliver me from the bondage of sin today. Thank You that through Jesus, You provided the rescue. Let me never doubt that in Your wisdom, You are also acting.

When my heart is overwhelmed

From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me. Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings!  PSALM 61:2-4 (NLT)

Lord, life happens all the time, and no matter how much I try to plan or prepare for the future, the unexpected occurs. I try to control my world, and just when I think I might have it all together, something happens to remind me that I am not in control. From deep grief to small disappointments, those things can cause my emotions to spin out of control and overwhelm my heart.

When those times come – and they will – lift my chin and help me focus on You. You are a very present help in times of trouble. Only You can calm the storm inside of me when a tornado of uncertainty spins from within. You are my peace and my strength. You provide shelter and safety to my wounded heart. When I look to You, I find a place of rest from all the questions running through my mind.

Thank You for always being there for me when I cry out to You. Thank You for always settling my soul with Your presence. I put my mind on You and I rest in the sanctuary of Your love. Help me live my life under the shelter of Your wings. I close my eyes and rest in You now.

A steadfast mind

The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, for in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock.  ISAIAH 26:3-4 (NASB)

Lord, I confess that often my mind is not ”stead-fast”. More often I am dwelling on concerns over the future, regrets about the past, or the overwhelming tasks of today. I long for that perfect peace that You promise to those who have a steadfast mind. I realize that this peace cannot be achieved by trying harder or attempting to ignore the anxiety-producing aspects of my life. The steadfast peace can only be possible when I learn to rest and trust in You.

There is no one better to put my trust in than You. You are in loving and powerful control of all things that are happening in my life. And You always will be. You are everlasting Rock on which I can learn for support and stability. You are unchanging, indestructible, and all-powerful. Why would I not put my trust in You?

Lord, thank You that You are there to support and sustain me during difficult and stressful times. Thank You that You are not a God who is far off, but rather a God that invites me to come to You and find security. When my heart is anxious, remind me to run to You, my Rock. Grant me that perfect peace that You promise to those who trust in You.

Give me sure footsteps

Uphold my steps in Your paths, that my footsteps may not slip. PSALM 17:5 (NKJV)

Dear Lord, I believe You are always aware of me. You know where I am right now, and You have a plan for my future. I want to trust You and be confident that everything is designed to make me more and more like You as I walk through each day. But sometimes it seems as though I’m totally on my own. It feels like I’m facing a mountain I have to climb, with nothing to hold on to. All I see is a steep mass with no way to get on the top.

Show me the path I’m to take, Lord. I trust You to guide me and make a way. When there are boulders along the route, please teach me how to use them as stepping stones. If I run into slippery places, give me solid footing. When the path twists and turns and I’m not sure which direction to go, I yearn for assurance that You are before me to direct my steps.

It’s easy to make my own decisions, only to realize I’ve gotten into something I can’t handle. Remind me always to depend on You to show me every step I should take. Then I can know, even when things are difficult, that You will take me to my destination. Give me grace to believe how much You care about every part of my life.
